Cut-away of a pocket spring mattress showing its layers

What is a pocket spring mattress?

Most of the mattresses in our Bundaberg showroom are built around pocket springs. Here's what that means, and why it matters for how well you sleep.

What is a pocket spring?

In a pocket spring mattress, every coil is wrapped in its own fabric pocket. Because the springs aren't wired together, each one moves on its own and responds to the weight directly above it. An older-style continuous coil (or Bonnell) mattress links all its springs together, so pressing down in one spot pulls the springs around it down too.

The benefits

  • Better support where you need it: heavier parts of your body like hips and shoulders press the springs further, while lighter areas get gentler support, helping keep your spine aligned.
  • Less partner disturbance: because each spring works independently, you're far less likely to feel your partner rolling over or getting up.
  • Cooler sleep: the space around the springs lets air flow through the mattress. See our guide to cooling mattresses.
  • Durability: quality heat-tempered springs hold their shape well, which helps the mattress resist sagging.
  • Works with adjustable beds: many pocket spring mattresses are designed to flex with an adjustable base.

What are zones?

Zoned pocket spring mattresses use springs of different firmness in different areas – for example softer under the shoulders and firmer under the hips and lower back. Five-zone and seven-zone systems fine-tune support along the length of your body.

Spring count isn't everything

More springs can mean finer support, but the gauge (thickness) of the wire, the zoning, and the comfort layers on top all matter just as much. The feel of the mattress comes mainly from those comfort layers – ultra plush through to super firm.

Look after it

Never bend or fold a pocket spring mattress, use a supportive base, and rotate it regularly. Read our tips on looking after a new mattress.
