Wool quilt on a made bed

How to choose the right quilt for every season

The right quilt keeps you comfortable without overheating – something that matters in Bundaberg, where we spend most of the year dealing with warmth rather than cold. Here's how to pick a quilt that suits you.

Choose your warmth (GSM)

A quilt's warmth is often shown as GSM – the weight of filling per square metre. The higher the number, the warmer the quilt.

  • Summer weight (low GSM): light and breathable for warm nights.
  • All-season (medium GSM): a good year-round option for most Queensland homes.
  • Winter weight (high GSM): for cooler months or people who feel the cold.

Some quilts come as two layers that clip together, so you can use the lighter one in summer and both in winter.

Choose your filling

  • Wool: naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, warm in winter without overheating, and wicks moisture – a great choice for hot sleepers.
  • Feather and down: light, fluffy and warm for its weight.
  • Microfibre: soft, light, easy to wash and good for allergy sufferers.
  • Bamboo and cotton blends: soft and breathable for warmer climates.

Think about how you sleep

If you run hot, choose a lighter weight and a breathable filling such as wool. If you feel the cold, go warmer. Couples with different temperatures can use two single-weight quilts on one bed.

Getting the size right

Many people size up their quilt (for example a king quilt on a queen bed) for a more generous drape and less tug-of-war.

Care

Use a quilt cover, air your quilt regularly, and check the care label – many microfibre quilts are machine washable, while wool and down may need specialist cleaning.
