Timber bed frame with botanical bedding

How to choose the right bed frame

Your bed frame sets the look of the whole bedroom, but it also has a practical job: supporting your mattress properly so it stays comfortable for years. Here's what to think about before you choose.

Bed frame or bed base?

A bed frame is a stand-alone frame, usually with a headboard and slats, that your mattress sits on. An ensemble base is a padded base designed to sit under a matching mattress, often with legs and no headboard. Both work – a frame is more about style; an ensemble is often a simple, supportive match for a new mattress.

Measure your room first

  • Allow at least 60–75cm of walking space around the sides and foot of the bed.
  • Check the frame's overall size, not just the mattress size – headboards and footboards add length.
  • Measure doorways, stairs and hallways so it can get into the room.

Choose your material

  • Timber: warm, classic and sturdy.
  • Upholstered (fabric): soft headboards, great for sitting up to read.
  • Metal: lightweight and slim.

Think about storage

Gas lift beds lift the whole base to reveal a large storage area underneath – ideal for linen, suitcases and seasonal clothing in smaller homes.

Height matters

A higher bed is easier to get in and out of, which is worth considering if you have sore knees or hips. If getting up is getting harder, an adjustable bed may be worth a look.

Check the support

Slats should be close together with a centre support rail on queen and king sizes. Poor support can make a mattress sag and may affect its warranty.
