A pillow does more than make the bed look nice. Its job is to fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck stays in line with your spine. Get it wrong and you can wake with a stiff neck, sore shoulders or headaches – even on a great mattress.
Match the pillow to how you sleep
Side sleepers
You have the biggest gap to fill between your ear and shoulder, so you'll usually need a high, firm pillow. Broad shoulders generally need a higher profile.
Back sleepers
A medium-height pillow that supports the curve of your neck without pushing your head forward. Contoured pillows work well here.
Stomach sleepers
A low, soft pillow – or sometimes none at all – so your neck isn't bent backwards.
Combination sleepers
A medium-height pillow with adjustable or mouldable filling lets you move between positions comfortably.
Don't forget your mattress
A softer mattress lets your shoulder sink further in, so you may need a slightly lower pillow. A firmer mattress usually means a slightly higher one. That's why it's best to try pillows on the same type of mattress you sleep on.
Common fillings
- Memory foam: moulds to your shape and holds it – good for neck support.
- Latex: supportive and springy, naturally breathable.
- Microfibre: soft, light, washable and affordable.
- Feather and down: soft and mouldable, but needs regular plumping.
- Pocket spring: supportive with good airflow.
When to replace your pillow
Most pillows last two to three years. Fold it in half – if it doesn't spring back, it's time for a new one. Use a pillow protector to keep it hygienic for longer.
